Organica’s research and development center growing

Otside the research facility

The first group of pilot scale experimental reactors has been installed recently in the Research and Development Center of Organica, Inc, in Telki.

The Center has been built right next to the Organica Technology based municipal wastewater treatment plant of Telki. The Center’s main function is to provide place for Organica’s technology development program.

The Center is composed of a technology space covered by greenhouse and a conventional building hosting office space, conference and locker rooms and other social facilities.

The technology space offers 200 m2 for testing and development of different wastewater treatment and water reuse technologies. Performing tests with real municipal wastewater was a consideration of primary importance during the design and recent operation of the Center.

The municipal wastewater is pumped from the external equalization tank of the municipal wastewater treatment plant operating right next to the Center. Passing a mechanical screening, the wastewater arrives to the Center’s internal equalization tank in a closed piping system. After the treatment has been performed in the pilot scale test systems, the water is pumped back to the same external equalization tank in closed pipings as well. From the external equalization tank it is pumped to the municipal WWTP, meaning that there is no possibility for the wastewater to leave the Center without being treated in the full scale municipal WWTP.

Taking into account the requirements of the pilot scale tests was a first priority item during the design process (providing proper physical places for the pilot scale systems, providing sufficient water- and electricity connection points, incorporating all the necessary health and safety requirements, etc).

Currently, there are two independent pilot reactor systems installed, equipped with three microfiltration units being able to produce effluent water from an improved phase separation. Moreover, there are two membrane based ultrafiltration units installed as well being able to produce effluent water with a quality appropriate for water reuse purposes. In all the above mentioned cases all the machinery and process control equipment necessary for automatic operation is installed too.

The technology space is covered by a greenhouse that contributes to the proper separation of the pilot systems from the environment and provides advantageous conditions for the technology plants’ metabolism as well.

An approximate 100 m2 area is connected to the technology space containing office space, conference and social rooms. In the office space there have been established workplaces for six people. The conference room is comfortable for 30 people to hold meetings and lectures. The social part is composed of black and white locker rooms, toilets and bathrooms, and a kitchen connected to the office space.

Conference held at the research facility

The additional functions of the Center (technology related trainings, education, small specialized conferences, etc.) are using intensively the facilities detailed above.

The R&D and Technology Center is situated right next to the municipal WWTP of Telki (Telki, reg. No. 062/3), it’s best accessible by car. The Center provides a six place parking lot for the visitors.

The construction and equipment of the Center became possible with the co-financing available from the Hungarian State and the European Union (project reg. No. KMOP-1.5.3/C-2009-0006, grant amount: 46.902.839 HUF).
