Organica Case Study – Gallicoop, Hungary

Gallicoop Corp. is one of the largest food processing operations in Eastern Europe. As the local public utilities imposed higher fees for treating the wastewater produced at the facility, Gallicoop needed a business-friendly solution for onsite processing of their wastewater. To solve the challenge, Organica delivered both a business-friendly solution, but an environmentally-friendly one as well.

“The beauty of Organica’s greenhouse has allowed us to place it at the entrance of our food processing plant. It not only does an excellent job at treating wastewater, but it generates a cost savings every day of the year.”

István Erdélyi
President and General Director of Gallicoop Inc

Based in Szarvas (Hungary), Gallicoop Corporation operates the largest poultry processing business in Eastern Europe. Founded in 1989, the company now nets more than €100 million in revenue, and markets over 25 thousand tons of meat products annually. During the 1990s, the company expanded so quickly that the local authorities began imposing surcharges on the increasing wastewater discharges. To lower expenses, Gallicoop was looking for a way to manage its wastewater treatment needs onsite. With land availability limited and close to the factory, a solution with a much smaller physical and “psychological” footprint than traditional approaches was needed. It was also important that the construction did not impact the operations of the processing facility. Naturally, effluent was required to be compliant with local environmental regulations.

Gallicoop chose the Organica solution for their wastewater treatment needs as it perfectly meets all the necessary requirements. With a compact footprint, the Organica facility was built on a small portion of the Gallicoop campus, thus no zoning variances were necessary nor was any additional property needed. Also because of the solution’s small footprint, the construction did not affect the operation of the processing facility, allowing continuous operation through the entire construction and commissioning process. Apart from its compact footprint, the Organica plant produces stable, high-quality effluent, compliant with the new, stricter European Union standards (Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive); especially as the WWTP discharges to an intermittent tributary to the Tisza River, Hungary’s second largest.

Organica’s solution eliminated excess wastewater treatment charges.

By eliminating surcharges from the local authorities, Organica’s solution saved Gallicoop significant expenses since installation in 2008, and with a payback period of five years, the investment has proven to be a real success. Additionally, the greenhouse structure visuals and odourless operation enables the facility to become an integral part of the campus, immediately next to the factory’s main entrance, employee parking, and one of the town’s main roads.
